EHO and four municipalities toward the Roma inclusion

In early 2017, EHO and four Serbian local municipalities: Blace, Bela Palanka, Gadžin Han and Aranđelovac have started cooperation in the project ” Improvement of living conditions of Roma and of other marginalized groups, prevention of illegal migrations and supporting reintegration of returnees to Serbia”.

Project ”Improvement of living conditions of Roma and of other marginalized groups, prevention of illegal migrations and supporting reintegration of returnees to Serbia”, realized by the consortium EHO (Serbia) and HEKS-EPER (Switzerland), is aimed at social inclusion process support, Roma living conditions advancement in Serbia, irregular migration prevention and returnee reintegration stimulation.

These four partner municipalities shall have realized the housing improvement program in substandard Roma settlements. The basis for realization of this program is usage of EHO working methodology, i.e. authored working methodology “Dweller Driven Upgrading of Roma settlements”. This internationally awarded working methodology, still unique in the region, is offering participatory and economical solution for establishment of sanitary minimum (“bathroom for all”) and housing conditions improvement in substandard Roma settlements not planned for depopulation.

In this year, the housing improvement program in substandard Roma settlements has successfully mobilized 20 million RSD from local/municipal budgets and 20 million RSD from Swiss partners. Thanks to this, bathroom construction and minor housing repeir operations were started in all four municipalities in April 2017. By the end of the year, 130 families shall have their housing conditions improved in this way.

Also, beside activities aimed at housing condition improvement the project shall organize various activities in areas of Migration and Education. Each four partner municipalities shall have realized various activities to aid education process of Roma and other socially challenged children. Furthermore, elementary schools in four municipalities shall have realized Intercultural education trainings for school staff. During the entire year there shall be organized other migration management activities aimed at service quality improvement in local communities for returnees from West-Europe countries, and activities related with irregular migration prevention.

The project is based on inter-sectoral cooperation insisting toward institutionalization of EHO working methodology, i.e. authored working methodology “Dweller Driven Upgrading of Roma settlements”.

In the period 01 March 2016 – 31 December 2018, Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization (in consortium with the Swiss partner HEKS-EPER) shall realize project ”Improvement of living conditions of Roma and of other marginalized groups, prevention of illegal migrations and supporting reintegration of returnees to Serbia”, worth 1,9 mill CHF, financed by the SSM - State Secretariat for Migration, Switzerland, SDC - Swiss agency for development and cooperation, Switzerland, HEKS-EPER, Switzerland and local self-government units in Serbia.
