Poverty & Educational Deprivation of Roma Children – Challenges during COVID19 pandemic before and after 2022

01. Jul 2022.

Roma are one of the most at risk groups of poverty and Roma children living in consistent poverty or ‘at risk of poverty’ are more exposed to deprivation and social marginalization and stigma as well.

Poverty has negative impacts on children’s health, social, emotional and cognitive development, behaviour and educational outcomes. Poverty puts an additional strain on families, which can lead to parental mental health and relationship problems, financial problems, social exclusion and segragation and substance misuse as well. Long-term impacts of play deprivation during early child development include isolation, depression, reduced self-control and poor resilience.

The heaviest burden of poverty is usually borne by Roma children as the most fragile members of the community. Roma children living in extreme poverty are often caught in a cycle of transgenerational poverty.
