International Refugee Day in the reception centers of Šid and Sombor

21. Jun 2022.

Since 2015, one and a half million refugees from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan have passed through our country. Through the project "Empowering Refugee Women and Children", the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization is currently providing support to this population in the reception centers of Šid Stanica and Sombor. Educators engaged in the project through various organized project activities with children, young people and women, strive to provide support and a sense of acceptance and inclusion of the present refugees in their daily routines. As June 20th is the International Refugee Day, through the realized activity, the users remembered their previous movement, the hardships they are facing and the impact on their family. Family togetherness was highlighted as the most important segment of life. In view of this symbolic date, the children presented in a creative way the consequence of the current migrations and showed the different locations of all their family members with the hope that soon they will all be in one place.

The current number of refugees in the Šid Stanica reception center is 150, while 780 people live in Sombor. This project is implemented by the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization with the support of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA).
