International Literacy Day celebrated in the Reception Center Šid

08. Sep 2022.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights from 1948 recognized the right to literacy.

On the occasion of International Literacy Day, celebrated worldwide on September 8, EHO organized a workshop on the given topic in the the Children's Corner of the Reception Center Šid, within the project "Empowering refugee women and children".

Celebrating of this day was started in 1967 which originated as a UNESCO idea, aiming to encourage awareness of literacy on a global level, but also as a warning to the large number of illiterate people around the world.

Eight types of literacy were presented at the workshop, which include: basic, functional, informational, visual, social, IT, digital and media, most of which we apply every day through various activities. Also, the educators emphasized the importance of literacy and the opportunities available to children staying in the reception center Šid.

The ecumenical humanitarian organization implements the project with the support of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA).
