At this year's Eurodiaconia meeting of their Extreme Destitution Network, Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization presented the DDM model of housing support as one of the possible ways of support for overcoming energy poverty and reducing energy costs.
The meeting was organized by Eurodiaconia on June 5 and 6, 2023 in Rome. The network meeting is hosted by Diaconia Valdese in Italy.
In recent years, Europe has been hit by successive crises: the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and rising energy prices and daily living costs. These crises are a major challenge for social protection systems because they lead large numbers of people into poverty and social exclusion. The focus of the meeting of the members of the network is the issue of energy poverty in the context of the current crisis of increased living costs.
The housing support model that EHO has been applying in Serbia since 2008 is presented as one of the ways to reduce energy costs. The model was developed with the aim of improving the living conditions of Roma and other socially disadvantaged persons in Serbia.
The "Dweller Driven Upgrading Model of Roma Settlements" (DDM) is support for the vulnerable, based on the principles of respect for human rights and uses an effective multi-sectoral approach, proven and applied in the Republic of Serbia by the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization and their Swiss partner HEKS/EPER.
