A successful EHO support case to returnee children that seeks a response
21. Nov 2023.
At the round table held on November 20, 2023 at the elementary school “Dušan Radović” in Novi Sad - Klisa, the common conclusion of participants was that the EHO projects "Additional educational support for returnee children" and "Service center" ongoing from December 1, 2022 to 30 11. 2023, (financed by the European Union (EU) and carried out by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)), was more than successfully implemented and that it is necessary to continue the educational support for returnee children and their families started with this project.
The participants of the meeting are representatives of the network established by the EHO for the purpose of the quality and professional implementation of the educational support: representatives of Elementary School "Dušan Radović" (principal Olivera Racić, psychologist Branislava Jeftić, pedagogical assistant Zorica Kalanjoš); representatives of Elementary School "Vuk Karadžić" (principal Zorica Zeljković, pedagogical assistant Miljana Jumerović); representatives of the Faculty of Medicine (Dr. sci med - dipl. defectologist - speech therapist Vesela Milankov, assistant in teaching at the Department of special education and rehabilitation Ivana Matić) and EHO project coordinators with tutor-associates who realize direct implementation of economic and educational support to returnees.
Other stakeholders in this network are: Director of the Office for Roma Inclusion of AP Vojvodina, Administration for Social and Child Protection of the City of Novi Sad and Community center “Vidovdansko naselje” (hosts of Service Center until 31 July 2023).
Through formal educational support (144 hours of additional support for at least 164 children who live in the Veliki Rit settlement and who attend the mentioned schools, the hours have been implemented) and informal support (visits to cinema screenings, theater performances and excursions) 164 children (55% boys and 45 % girls).
The representatives of both schools expressed a huge need to provide support to children, especially in the lower classes, during the period of their adaptation to the new environment and school obligations, especially due to the language barrier.
Support was provided to the students of the first grade in mastering reading and writing, as well as support to the students of the VIII grade in the form of preparation for taking the final exam. As part of peer education, students of grades VII and VIII provided additional support to students of grades V and VI.
In addition to the necessary formal support, the children received the necessary attention and dedication in the workshops. Their new developed sense of belonging and security made them eager to come and acquire new knowledge which is otherwise required to gain self-confidence while accommodating into the new living environment. Also, our workshops brought together children who previously had different of conflicts and thus new unexpected friendships were created. Thanks to the goal of EHO and the time spent together at the workshops, they saw the importance of mutual support, acceptance and appreciation. Furthermore, the EHO workshops provided an opportunity for individual pupils from higher grades, selected by their teachers, to learn to accept responsibilities, step into "other people's" shoes and partially take over the teachers’ roles, and (above all) to develop their self-confidence through observing and experiencing themselves from a new and different angle.
The children have acquired the habit of coming, and the expert survey conducted on the subject of pupils achievement unequivocally showed that the workshops contributed to a better acquisition of students' knowledge and their personal development, which may facilitate a better cooperation with teachers, and an improved social re-integration of entire families.
