Of the intercultural project "The Welcome Recipe of the Popovića" at the "Jovan Popović" Primary School in Susek

24. Aug 2024.

Elementary school "Jovan Popović" from Susek was among the 11 selected schools that were supported by a grant from the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization within the project "Social inclusion for a dignified life of Roma and other vulnerable people in Serbia 2023-2026", for the implementation of projects that promote inclusion, tolerance, equality, democratic culture, participation and empathy.

The school participates in our project for the second time, which is an indicator of good experience and activity results, and the previous project "Let's get to know each other" continues to be successfully implemented. The focus of the project "The Welcome Recipe of the Popovića" is aimed at supporting the adaptation of newly arrived pupils and empowering children to be proud of their identity and diversity. There is an increase in students coming from different backgrounds in the school, so everyone from the school tries to work on inclusion and support diversity as an asset of the local community.

The "Popović Welcome Team" was formed as the bearer of the project activities, consisting of members of the Student Parliament and the Peer Team. Over the course of six months, the workshops "Let's solve problems - using the Fair Play Map", "Recognize discrimination", "Open your heart", "Step up", "Let's put on other people's shoes - imagine, experience and express yourself", "Why won't to hang out with me". A seminar was held for employees, "Let each other be friends - the department as a team for the prevention of peer violence".

As one of the results of the project is the "Friendship Wall", which adorns the school corridor and is a symbol of cultural richness, unity and diversity, giving a special value to the school environment.

The activities and ideas that arose during the project will improve the work plan of the existing Transition Team, and will especially contribute to a better cooperation with the parents of newly arrived pupils and the inclusion of families in the school community.

The activities and results of the project were presented to pupils and employees from district schools in Banoštor, Lug, Sviloš, as well as elementary school "Jovan Grčić Milenko" from Beočin and PU "Ljuba Stanković" from Beočin , as an example of good practice under the slogan, "Popovics share the welcoming recipe" - share it too".

The project "Social inclusion for a dignified life of Roma and other vulnerable persons in the Republic of Serbia 2023-2026" is financed by HEKS EPER, Switzerland .
