02. Oct 2024.

Girls, participants in the project "Empowerment of Roma girls and women 2024-2027", supported through the program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and implemented by the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization, are on Friday 09/27/2024 attended the conference "Light and shadow: Roma in the education system", held in the Palace of Serbia.

At the conference organized by the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the Office of the Council of Europe in Belgrade and the European Center for Roma Rights, the challenges and necessary steps to achieve equal and quality access to education for all children were discussed.

The commissioner for the protection of equality pointed out that schools should be places without prejudice and violence, where discrimination is not tolerated. Education must be accessible to all, regardless of ethnicity.

The conference was of exceptional importance for the girls participating in the project, because they had the opportunity to listen to experts and decision-makers who deal with improving the position of Roma in education. This event allowed them to gain an insight into what the Roma community faces, but also to learn more about opportunities and initiatives that can improve their educational path, encouraging them to further development and education.
