International Roma Day

08. Apr 2025.

International Roma Day is celebrated on 8 April every year around the world, as an opportunity to pay tribute to the rich culture and traditions of the Roma, but also to raise awareness of the challenges facing this community. This date was established in 1971 at the first World Roma Congress in London, which marked a turning point in the organized advocacy of Roma for their rights. The congress adopted the Roma flag and the anthem "Đelem, Đelem", which gave the Roma as a people a symbolic identity and international recognition.

This day is not only an occasion for celebration, but also a reminder of the historical struggle of the Roma for equality, inclusion in society and the right to a dignified life. International Roma Day reminds us of the importance of fighting prejudice and stereotypes and promotes the inclusion of Roma in all social streams.

The Roma are a people with a rich cultural heritage, reflected in their music, dance, language and customs. Roma music, which combines traditional elements with modern trends, is recognized and appreciated throughout the world. Their language, Romani Chhib, is recognized in many countries, and Roma literature and oral tradition bear witness to stories and values passed down through the centuries. The preservation of Roma identity, language and culture is of essential importance for society as a whole, as it contributes to its diversity and richness.

One of the key goals of marking this day is to encourage the inclusion of Roma in all aspects of social life. This includes equal access to education, employment, health and social services. Inclusion does not only mean the formal recognition of rights, but also the creation of conditions in which Roma can live with dignity, without discrimination and marginalization.

We congratulate all members of the Roma community on this important day! May this day be a reminder of the importance of solidarity, togetherness and respect for diversity. May the fight for equality, dignity and inclusion of Roma be a permanent goal for all of us, so that together we can build a society of equal opportunities for all.
