EHO at a joint meeting of Eurodiaconia - a network on migration and the care sector in Finland

27. Sep 2025.

EHO project coordinator Borka Vrekić, participated in the joint meeting of the Care Network and the Migration Network, at September 25 and 26, 2025, held in Oulu, Finland, organized by the Oulu Deaconess Institute (ODL) and Eurodiaconia.

This year's event focused on the role of migrant workers in the care sector and ensuring fair and dignified working conditions. Participants from different European countries exchanged experiences and good practices, particularly in the areas of migrant employment, recognition of informal learning and promoting social inclusion.

The meeting featured lectures and panel discussions on integration and culturally sensitive work communities, as well as workshops on policymaking aimed at improving the position of migrant workers in the EU. The importance of supporting migrant women, who are most often engaged in precarious and undervalued jobs in the care sector, was particularly highlighted.

Participants had the opportunity to visit the Vesperkoti elderly care facility and International House Oulu, where they learned about practical models of migrant support and integration into the local community.

The final part of the meeting produced recommendations for national and European decision-makers with the aim of creating a more sustainable care system and strengthening the labor rights of migrant workers.
