1st October - The International Day of Older Persons
01. Oct 2020.
The year of 2020 is the 75th birthday of the United Nations and the 30th birthday of the International Day of Older Persons. Also, the 2020 was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that the risk of disease is higher among the elderly, public health policies and programs have included promotional activities aimed at raising awareness of their special needs. It is also important to recognize the responsibility of older people towards their own health and their role in the phases of preparedness and response to the current and future pandemic.
The theme of this year's campaign is: Has the pandemic changed the view of age and aging? The aging of the population today is one of the greatest successes of mankind, but it is also one of the greatest public health challenges, especially now in the period of the pandemic.
The Republic of Serbia with an average age of 41.6 years (2011) is one of the oldest countries in the world. The percentage of people over the age of 65 will be at least 22% by 2030, which is almost one in four inhabitants. The population of Serbia is getting older. The "oldest" is the region of southern and eastern Serbia, where as much as 25% of the population is older than 60 years.
Ecumenical humanitarian organization supports active aging and the inclusion of the elderly in society through various activities and projects, especially through the Club for Seniors and Home Care.
