February 4th - World Day of the Anti-Cancer Combat
04. Feb 2021.
World Cancer Day, February 4, is celebrated each year around the world, with an aim to raise public awareness on this vicious disease, on risks to develop the disease, on encouraging the simplest possible cancer-prevention measures, on timely detection, and on cancer treatment/care. In 2019, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) started a three-year campaign under the slogan "I am, I will", which reminds that the individual and the community can contribute to reducing the global burden of malignant diseases.
Malignant diseases are one of the biggest public health issues in the world. According to the latest data from the World Health Organization and the International Cancer Research Agency, the burden of malignant diseases in the world is increasing, and it is expected that by 2032, 25 million people worldwide would be affected.
In Serbia, average 36,000 new cases of cancer are discovered annualy, with more than 20,000 cancer deaths per year. The leading causes of morbidity and mortality from cancer in our country are almost identical to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality from malignant tumors in the most developed countries. Men in our environment suffer from cancer on lungs, colon, rectum and prostate, while among women most persons contract and die from cancer on breast, colon, lungs and cervix.
