Support to Children Involved in Life and / or work on Street

The project, is being implemented by the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization since August 2009. Project activities are designed to support children and young people, their families. It is an effort to reduce the number of those who see the street as a major factor in own formation, and to increase the number of people involved in regular social and educational activities. The aim of the project is to support children and young people at risk who are caught in a situation to depend from life and / or work on street, whether alone, with peers or with their family. Targeted is also the entire population of children and young people who form strong links with public spaces (i.e. street) that play a major role in daily life and identity. The above definition is part of a document issued by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in June 2017, “General Comment on Street Children,” and it has proposed a more appropriate term: Children in Street Situation. Project activities are carried out on the territory of the City of Novi Sad. It covers three substandard settlements (Adice, Bangladeš and Veliki Rit), few particular mapped parts of the city where children and young people at risk spend time on street, including the Extended Stay Program of the “Jožef Atila” Primary School. In accordance with the above, the project has organized:

• Field work that involve field associates, final year students of humanities. Their field work with targeted children is organized and conducted at multiple levels: contacting beneficiaries, providing basic psychosocial support, children’s empowerment and education on all risks of work and stay on street unsupervised by parents / guardians and on adequate (self) protection, including concrete activities aimed at (re) socialization and overcoming social barrier.

• Work within the Shelter for Chgildren and Youth of the City of Novi Sad and in elementary schools "Jožef Atila”, "Vuk Karadžić", "Dušan Radović" from Novi Sad and "Veljko Petrović" from Begeč is conducted by volunteers of the above educational profile: aided support in learning to pupils from 1st and 2nd grade through individual and group work aimed to overcome difficulties in learning and mastering the material. This represents a dropout prevention of children from socially vulnerable categories in education system.

The activities of the project are support for an inclusive society.
